Scraper

Hand scraping is the ability to remove small portions of metal from a surface using a hand tool specially made for that purpose. A hand scraper is a single edged tool that is used by a craftsman for the removal of small amounts of metal. They are used to make highly precise surfaces in the bed and ways of machine tools, and the surface of surface plates. They are especially useful when a surface has to be trued when it has to meet with a matching part that has to be corrected. Another place where scraping is used is too true the surface of a circular bearing. A bearing cast of Babbitt metal or bronze is an example of this type of bearing.
There are three types of hand scraping tools. The single edged straight tool that looks like a large chisel is used for scraping machine tools and surface plates. The three cornered scraper is used for deburring holes and scraping bush bearings that are usually made from bronze or some kind of a white metal. There is also a curved scraper that is used for truing deep bush bearings.
Scrapers are made out of either alloy tool steel, high speed steel or solid tungsten carbide.
