Vertical axis molds are used for cylindrical castings of relatively short length and intricately shaped castings
which may be clustered around a central reservoir. The inside surface of vertical axis casting is not cylindrical
but approaches the shape of a parabola. Shorter components, such as rings and flanges, are therefore frequently
cast vertically. The speed of rotation, together with the outside diameter of the casting and column of metal,
determine the shape of the parabola. The lower limits of speed are governed by the amount of taper tolerable
in the casting. The upper limits of speed are dictated by the need to avoid excessive stresses in the progressively
solidifying outer casting skin.
The process consists in having the molds revolve around a vertical axis, while submitting the molten steel
to varying acceleration according to their dimension and shape.
